Throughout the southern United States, millions of bales of pine straw are sold each year. It is a favorite among landscapers and gardeners because it not only looks great in lawns, but is also environmentally sensitive and sustainable. Unlike cypress mulch, no trees are destroyed to create pine straw mulch; it is organic and contains no dangerous chemicals. Pine straw inhibits weed growth better than other mulches and will not float, wash away, or blow away like processed mulches. The pine straw needles interlock to create a natural net that covers the ground, and thereby preserves moisture and nutrients longer than other mulches.
Because pine straw is a “dead” material, it does not take nitrogen from the soil and does not contribute to the transfer of plant diseases, insects, or rodents. The beautiful red color of pine straw lasts longer than the color of processed mulches like cypress and eucalyptus, making it more cost effective for replenishment in landscape beds. Most importantly, pine straw is a naturally occurring resource that makes your landscape look incredible!
